Languages

Foreign language education is about learning to understand and speak different languages. But language courses are also about developing cultural awareness and empathy. In a multicultural society such as ours this can be done without leaving the UK, but thousands of British students do go abroad in school groups and bring back a wealth of linguistic and cultural experiences.

Contact with foreign countries at school level tends to be European and Western European, but more and more schools are taking groups to Easter Europe, not just on visits but to play sport, or make music, or participate in dance and acting events, or to join in youth conferences.

Many groups book travel and accommodation through travel companies, but many make their own arrangements, using local coach companies or national air companies or eurorail. Homestays or school exchanges can bring students closer, but these are not always possible and also bring with them more issues, preparation and monitoring.

Often links are already established between schools or areas, but if you are seeking to find link schools in a particular country you may utilise personal contacts which of your own, or those of others within the school community. Other routes include twinned towns or villages or the European Union’s Socrates programme can give invaluable help to schools seeking partners. The aim of Socrates Phase II is to promote a Europe of knowledge and encourage lifelong education through learning foreign languages, encouraging mobility, promoting cooperation at European level, opening up to methods of access to education and increasing the use of new technologies in the field of education.
