Aberdeen lies on the bank of the River Dee and the River Don it is a city famous historically for ship building. It is often referred to as the Granite City due to the local stone which adorns so many of its buildings and is the centre of the UK's oil industry.

The surrounding Grampian mountains are crammed full of castles such as Craigievar Castle, Fyvie Castle and Drum Castle. Not to mention the Queen's Scottish home, Balmoral Castle. They are also where distilleries such as Glenlivet, Glen Moray and Royal Lochnagar are to be found. The countryside is also perfect for hiking, orienteering or the Duke of Edinburgh award. There are countless huge mountains to climb so mountaineering is another major activity, although training and precautions should be taken as the weather and conditions can change at a moment's notice in this wilderness.

The city holds an annual international Youth Festival which attracts up to 1,000 talented young performing arts companies.
