North and Central America
North and Central America
Across the Atlantic Ocean from the UK, the continent of North and Central America is mainly dominated by Canada, the United States and Mexico, but has several smaller countries in the south. The continent reaches from the north to the south of the Northern Hemisphere, and subsequently has a wide variety of weather and landscape; from the ice-covered Greenland only 450 miles from the North Pole to tropically warm countries such as Costa Rica and Panama near the Equator.
The destination of the United States would certainly be one of the most popular with students; the country is one of the most famous in the world, and is bursting with modern culture alongside a complex history and some of the most recognisable landmarks and buildings in the world. However, this continent has a lot more to offer than just the States - Canadian wildlife, landscape and history are often overlooked, but it's one of the most multicultural and scenic nations in the world and would be a great place to take students.
The smaller countries of Central America are often overshadowed by the size of those in the north, but they all hold their own with their individual histories, local traditions and cultures. Taking pupils to this area would make for an interesting and more unconventional look at life on the North and Central American continent; there is just as much to see and do in this region as there is in the States, just concentrated into a smaller area. Crossing the Atlantic will definitely involve a long plane ride, but the immense variety of destinations on the other side is worth the trip.
