Canyoning
Canyoning
What is it?
A canyon is defined as a deep gap in the ground, and has normally been made over long periods of time by the flow of water. Canyoning is the practice of traveling through such places in different manners appropriate to the terrain, with the various methods including basics such as walking and swimming to more specialist techniques such as abseiling and scrambling.
What does it involve?
Canyoning generally requires some technical know-how to properly understand how to travel on potentially unstable surfaces, but the main aim is exploration and enjoyment! It can involve many different physical experiences and can be as easy or as hard as is needed.
Why do it and what are the benefits?
Going canyoning is a great way to see a natural feature up close and personal - physical interaction with a landscape that has evolved over thousands of years can really increase respect for the environment.
What equipment do we need?
You should be practicing canyoning with an activity provider, so they should provide the majority of the equipment needed, but always check with them beforehand - you may need to ensure the students are wearing appropriate clothing!
Who is it suitable for?
Canyoning activities can be adjusted to suit most age groups, but you should check with the provider beforehand as their local canyons may have certain age restrictions on them.
Costs?
Canyoning is a reasonably specialist activity and requires quite a bit of safety equipment, so may be more expensive than other outdoor physical activities, but if you shop around and get the best value for your group size then the costs shouldn't run too high.
Issues/Things to think about? (unsuitable for age groups, medical conditions etc)
You should be confident in your students that they will pay attention to safety procedures, especially younger groups!
How do we include?
Some more severe physical disabilities may limit involvement in canyoning, so if you are concerned, check with the activity provider beforehand to see exactly what they are set up for and if they can give you advice on your specific situation.
Doing it abroad?
Some of the most impressive canyons in the world are found in foreign countries, some of which (like the Grand Canyon) are famous internationally. A visit to any of these would be well worth your time if there is one located in the country of your destination!
