Duke of Edinburgh

Duke of Edinburgh

What is it?

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is the world’s leading achievement award for young people. Its aim is to create a world where young people can reach their full potential whatever their circumstances. Its ethos is to enable every young person of every background to succeed in completing their DofE, regardless of any barriers.

What does it involve?

Undertaking a DofE award involves a young person undertaking a balanced programme of activities that develops the whole person – mind, body and soul – in an environment of social interaction and teamworking. Young people progress through three levels of DofE programmes to achieve a Bronze, Silver or Gold Award.

Why do it and what are the benefits?

Taking part builds confidence and develops self-esteem. It requires persistence, commitment and has a lasting impact on the attitudes and outlook of all young people who do their DofE.

What equipment do we need?

The wide variety of activities available on the DofE scheme means the equipment needed will vary from event to event - participants/leaders should check what is needed before each new venture.

Who is it suitable for?

Participants are aged between 14 and 24.

Costs?

There are various DofE awards available which all have different costs for the students to sign up for - they currently stand at £16 for Bronze and Silver and £23 for Gold. Different centres may have extra administration charges, but these should always be advertised.

Issues/Things to think about? (unsuitable for age groups, medical conditions etc)

The DofE scheme aims to cater to all people regardless of disability or medical conditions, but its best to consult with the centres directly if you have any concerns about a student. Also, bear in mind the age limit when talking to groups of students about taking part as you don't want younger children to be interested to then only be denied entry.
