Parkour / Free Running

Parkour / Free Running

What is it?

Parkour (the name derives from the original french name "le parcours", meaning "the course" or "the way through" and originated due to the military term for obstacle course being "parcours du combattant") is a mainly outdoor pursuit that started and developed in France in the late 20th Century. Modern Parkour was popularised by French actor and stuntman David Belle - his video Speed Air Man played a large part in popularising the sport.

Often called Free Running, the general practice of Parkour involves getting from one set point to another in the quickest and most efficient way possible, using whatever obstacles are in your path to help you instead of hinder you. It has become progressively more popular as both a sport and a recreational activity, and can be practiced almost anywhere.

What does it involve?

The physical elements of Parkour can involve climbing, jumping, rolling and generally interacting with/having fun on buildings, in trees or any other structure that takes your fancy!

Why do it and what are the benefits?

Parkour is beneficial for many reasons - it helps build physical strength and agility whilst improving how quickly you can think on your feet. It's great for helping people get to grips with their personal limits and understand the capabilities of their own bodies, and is a fun and unconventional way of exercising!

What equipment do we need?

You shouldn't need to provide any equipment for a Parkour experience other than some safety equipment as it's all there in front fo you! Beginners should always at least wear a helmet, but if you are practising the activity with a specific provider it is likely that they will supply anything that is needed.

Who is it suitable for?

Because Parkour mainly uses urban areas, smaller children may not be as able to manage climbing over things as well as larger children due to physical size!

Costs?

Those who are experienced in Parkour will be able to do it for free, but a tutor will charge for lessons.

Issues/Things to think about? (unsuitable for age groups, medical conditions etc)

Parkour is a reasonably fast-paced sport that requires a lot of independent movement and can be reasonably unsafe if practiced incorrectly - make sure you are confident that the students are capable of paying attention to the instructions properly!

How do we include?

Including those with physical disabilities will be harder than a lot of other pastimes, as it calls for a lot of independent, fast paced movement - participating in Parkour will depend entirely on the capabilties of the individual.

Doing it abroad?

Within reason, Parkour can be practiced all over the world, but to learn about it you are best advised to seek tuition in the UK.
