Coasteering

Coasteering

What is it?

Coasteering is the practice of moving along a coastal area in various manners such as swimming, climbing, scrambling and diving – the nature of coasteering depends on the exact conditions of the area.

What does it involve?

Generally, coasteering involves a lot of physical movement and knowledge of the appropriate way to navigate different types of terrain. It can vary from gentle climbing to scaling large cliffs and diving from great heights; an activity everyone can enjoy in some form!

Why do it and what are the benefits?

This activity is a great way of getting exercise, as it involves mental as well as physical involvement and differs every time!

What equipment do we need?

It’s likely that you’ll be using an activity provider for any coasteering activities, so you they should provide all the equipment you should need! However, you should always check beforehand to make sure.

Who is it suitable for?

Due to the physical demands of the activity, it’s going to be more suitable for older students, but if the provider has an activity tailored for younger children then it would be a great thing to do!

Costs?

The costs will vary depending on the provider and the intensity of the activity, so make sure to thoroughly check out what’s available in your area to get the best for your money.

Issues/Things to think about? (unsuitable for age groups, medical conditions etc)

You should be confident in your students that they can properly pay attention to instructions and safety measures – younger children will need careful supervision!

How do we include?

Check with the activity provider to find out about their exact set up and what disabilities they can cater for.

Doing it abroad?

Foreign coasts can be much more exciting than those in the UK, so if there is a coasteering provider available in your chosen destination it would be a great activity to participate in whilst abroad!
