Dundee
Dundee is famous for the three J’s: jute, journalism and jam. There is also a tasty fruit cake named after the city, but the countryside around Dundee is also renowned as being both beautiful and a great place to learn.
Author JM Barrie hailed from Dundee and students of English and Drama can take a trip to visit his birthplace to find out more about his work, including Peter Pan, and also the Kirriemuir Camera Obscura, which Barrie donated to his hometown. In the surrounding area at the Camperdown WIldlife Centre budding scientists can learn about animals and the environment, then experience the beauty of the Montrose Nature Reserve. They can also visit Dundee Science Centre to take part in workshops and experiments.
The city itself offers a full insight into the history of its jute production at the Verdant Works. Much of Dundee life is centred around the water it lies of the north bank of the River Bay only a few miles before it feeds into the North Sea. Those seeking to learn about the history of discovery and exploration can visit Captain Scott's famous RRS Discovery, which once ventured to the Antarctic, is available to explore at Discovery Quay.
