Landscape: Numerous coastal islands, with low mountains, lakes, large rivers, forested highlands and flat plains all found inland.

Climate/Seasons: Reasonably warm in the summer months but can be rainy, with the warmest areas by the coast and the coldest in the higher areas, which can be prone to snow in winter.

When to Go: The summer period of May - August is the sunniest time of year in Croatia, although there are few sandy beaches and so crowds often overflow. October half-term can be a much more pleasant time to visit, with beautiful Adriatic sunshine but far fewer people around.

Reasons to Visit: Croatia is a great place to come for both relaxation and education; the stunning coastline and fascinating history make this a country ideal for all types of trips. With a recent history of Balkan turmoil there is a lot for students to get their teeth into regarding understanding the reasons behind the tensions which caused many of the major conflicts of the 20th Century.

How to Get There: There are a number of good international airports in Croatia spaced out through the country, so there'll be easy access to your destination wherever it is in the country.

History: Used to be part of communist state Yugoslavia, the 1990's saw Croatia regain independence but only after a bloody war with Serbia and Bosnia which threatened to tear the Balkans apart.

Culture: Blend of eastern and western culture - lots of theatre, varying cuisine, sport
