The history and heritage of Doncaster is shaped around its initial involvement in the transport industry. In the 17th century life in the city centred on the stagecoach trade this gave rise to horse breeding leading to the construction of Doncaster race course. This rich past can be found today in local museums including Aeroventure and The Trolley Bus Museum.

The Jungle Zoo

Mattersey Priory

The priory of St Helen stands on a gravel island on the west side of the River Idle, in what was marshland in the Middle Ages.

It was established in 1185 by Roger fitzRalph of nearby Mattersey for the Gilbertine Order, the only monastic order to have originated in England.

Howden Minster

he King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry Museum received £204,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund for the refurbishment of this re-telling of the story of this famous regiment which was founded in 1757. Generous contributions towards the cost of the project were also received from the Regimental Trustees and the Friends of Doncaster Museums

Idle Valley Nature Reserve

This spectacular wetland site covers an area of 450 hectares following the River Idle northwards. The size of 600 football pitches, it is one of the largest sites for nature conservation in the East Midlands.
