Dunster Castle

An ancient castle and comfortable country home with dramatic vistas and subtropical gardens

Dramatically sited on a wooded hill, a castle has existed here since at least Norman times, with an impressive medieval gatehouse and ruined tower giving a reminder of its turbulent history.

The castle that you see today became a lavish country home during the 19th century for the Luttrell family, who lived here for 600 years.

Holnicote Estate

Varied landscape of moorland, woods, farms and coast, rich in wildlife

Holnicote Estate makes up 12,000 acres of Exmoor National Park and is a contrasting landscape with everything from wild, rugged moorland and shingle beaches to ancient woodland and charming thatched villages.

Priest's House, Muchelney

Late medieval hall-house in a picturesque village

This medieval hall-house was built in 1308 for the parish priest of the church opposite, and has been little altered since the early 17th century.

Interesting features include the Gothic doorway, magnificent double-height tracery windows and a massive 15th-century stone fireplace.

Tropiquaria Wildlife Park

Tropiquaria is pleased to be able to admit large, pre-booked, groups at discounted rates, whether the visit is educational, entirely for fun, or for a mixture of the two. Education can be FUN!

Both directors take the welfare of disabled and disadvantaged groups very seriously and with notice can arrange to make the visits of such groups more rewarding.

Dunster Yarn Market

This fine 17th century timber-framed octagonal market hall is a monument to Dunster's once-flourishing cloth trade.

Pinkery Outdoor Education Centre

Pinkery offers a residential experience that enhances understanding and enjoyment of Exmoor’s special qualities. Pinkery is Exmoor National Park Authority’s centre for Outdoor Education. It has been in operation since 1969 and offers a warm welcome and introduction to Exmoor National Park for all our visiting groups.

Dunster Working Mill

Fully restored 18th-century working watermill

Visit this impressive restored 18th-century watermill built on the site of a mill mentioned in the Domesday Survey of 1086. The mill currently produces stoneground wholemeal flour from organic wheat. The team also pack porridge oats and jumbo oats, and mix and pack their own museli. All are available to buy onsite.

Cleeve Abbey

In Washford lies one of the undiscovered jewels of Somerset, providing an interesting day out for families and budding historians alike. The Cistercian abbey of Cleeve is a haven of peace and tranquillity, said to contain the finest cloister buildings in England.

Muchelny Abbey

Muchelney Abbey, which lies two miles south of Langport, was once a landmark in the Somerset Levels and still has much to offer its visitors – history lovers in particular will enjoy this fascinating site but there is also plenty for families to do.

Brean Down

A natural pier with dramatic cliffs and Victorian fort

Brean Down is a wonderful location for a day out in Somerset. Enjoy relaxing on the beach at the foot of the Down, building sandcastles and visiting the Cove Café for a seaside treat.

Venture to the top of the Down and take the exhilarating 1.5 mile walk along Somerset’s greatest natural pier.

Bow Bridge

This narrow 15th century stone bridge across Mill Beck carried an old packhorse route to nearby Furness Abbey.

Bow Bridge was built in the fifteenth century from the same plentiful supply of red sandstone and grey limestone as Furness Abbey, which dates back to the 1120s.

Coleridge Cottage

Home of Romantic poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge

The 17th-century cottage was home to Coleridge for three years, from 1797. It was during his time here in Somerset that Coleridge wrote his finest works, including The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, Kubla Khan, Frost at Midnight, The Nightingale, Cristabel and This Lime Tree Bower my Prison.
