The Isle of Wight is the largest island in England, and lies just off the southern coast close to Southampton and Portsmouth. Whilst well known for hosting major music events such as Bestival and the Isle of Wight Festival, there are many smaller sights to see island-wide - from historical ruins to modern attractions. Queen Victoria loved the island and spent long periods of time at her beloved Osborne House. You can now visit her own private beach and step inside her bathing machine! 

There are also many areas of outstanding natural beauty to visit such as Compton Bay. With some great attractions such as Robin Hill Adventure Park & Gardens, East Dene Centre, Isle of Wight Zoo and The Needles Park to entertain both children and adults, there's plenty to do here that covers pretty much every subject you can think of!

Ventnor Downs

Dramatic views from the highest point on the Island

The Ventnor Downs rise steeply above the Victorian seaside town of Ventnor. With the sparkling sea below and the holm oak trees which have colonised the south facing chalk slopes there is almost a Mediterranean flavour to the landscape. On the top of the downs you find a complete change of landscape with large open areas of grass and heather.

The Needles Old Battery and New Battery

Perched high above the Needles at the extreme tip of the Island, with unrivalled views of the Solent and unspoilt countryside, is the Needles Old Battery a Victorian fort built in 1862 and used throughout both World Wars.

The Needles Headland and Tennyson Down

Beautiful open downland,sheer chalk cliffs and dramatic sea views

Be inspired as Tennyson was
Tennyson Down is probably one of the most popular places to walk on the Island. You can enjoy it just for the great leg-stretch from Freshwater Bay to the Needles Headland, and drink in the salt laden air that so inspired Tennyson. However every time you visit, the light and weather conditions are different so it is well worth returning.

St Helens Duver

Sand dunes with a royal history and great coastal views

St Helens Duver is a lovely place to relax or gently wander. There are sandy beaches, rock pools, sand dunes and coastal woods all within a small area. There is easy access from the car park onto the Duver with its short turf and gently undulating ground and views over Bembridge Harbour.

St Catherine's Down and Knowles Farm

A wild rocky coast with jutting cliffs, a windswept down and sheltered wooded valley

This is possibly one of the most wild and beautiful parts of the Isle of Wight with a wonderfully varied landscape in a relatively small area.

Appuldurcombe Falconry Centre

Once the grandest and most striking house on the Isle of Wight, Appuldurcombe's 18th century baroque elegance is still notable today in the partly restored shell of the building. Admire the delightful east front and stroll peacefully through 'Capability' Brown's idyllic ornamental 11 acres of grounds. Treat yourself in our well stocked and attractive souvenir shop.

Mottistone

A farmed landscape with wonderful walks and great coastal views

There's lots of variety to explore on the Mottistone Estate which stretches from the chalk downs through rolling hedge lined farmland to the sea.

There is a car park and bus stop next to Mottistone Manor Garden which is a good place to start your visit. It's a great place to walk with many well marked paths to choose from and good expanses of open downland to wander freely over.

Blackgang Chine

Every year hundreds of school parties from across the country visit Blackgang Chine. Childrens' imaginations run wild as they enjoy the many themed areas around the park.

Amazon World

Amazon World Zoo Park has a huge range of unusual rare and exotic animals. At the last count it was somewhere in the region of 200 different species, spanning the entire animal kingdom!

We have mammals, reptiles, birds, insects, spiders, fish and amphibians. Botany is important too.

A quiet backwater with a busy Medieval past, now bursting with wildlife

This is the only National Nature Reserve on the Isle of Wight. It is a beautiful retreat that has something to offer boat owners, walkers, wildlife enthusiasts and historians or just those in search of peace and tranquility.

One of the best visitor attractions on the Isle of Wight to bring your school or group to.

Borthwood Copse

Paths wind through ancient oak woodland with sunny glades

Borthwood Copse is a delightful spot to wander amongst ancient oak and beech trees, sunny glades and chestnut and hazel coppice. You may be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of a red squirrel as it scurries through the upper branches in search of food.

Compton Bay and Downs

One of the Isle of Wight's favourite beaches and biggest expanses of open downland

Compton Bay and Downs are at the the heart of the much loved open landscape of the south west of the Isle of Wight. It has all the elements of a great day out in the countryside. There is plenty of space for families, surfing and other non-motorised water sports and a part of the beach open to dog walkers all year round.

Chillerton Down

An impressive flank of open downland

Chillerton Down and the land around Gatcombe village is a beautiful area of downland, farmed and wooded valleys hidden away in the middle of the Isle of Wight.

It is partly owned by the National Trust and partly protected by National Trust covenants to preserve the beauty of the landscape.

Bembridge Windmill

The only surviving windmill on the Isle of Wight

This little gem is a Grade 1 listed building and one of the island's most iconic images. Built around 1700, it last operated in 1913 but still has most of its original machinery intact.

Climb to the top of the mill then find out how it once worked as you descend its four floors.

British schoolgirl assaulted on school trip to Iceland

A viral video shows a black girl being assaulted by a white woman in a corridor.

Police in Iceland are investigating after a British schoolgirl was slapped and chased by a tour guide in a hotel corridor.

The schoolgirl, 13, who attended Harris Girls’ Academy, was assaulted whilst on a school trip to Iceland to see the Northern Lights. The incident occurred at Hotel Örk, Hveragerdi on 13th October.
