York
York
York is an historic walled city most of which still remains today, it was once the greatest city of northern England, and home of the Roman Emperor Septimius Severus (145-211 AD), when the city was known as Eboracum. The rich heritage extends across the city with the iconic York Minster (pictured), Clifford’s Tower, the National Railway Museum and the Jorvik Viking Centre museum. The city also hosts many annual festivals celebrating their history, including the famous Mummers' Plays.
Further afield Roman remains can be studied at Beadlam Roman Villa, the mysteries of the deep can be uncovered at Scarborough Sea Life Sanctuary, while curiosities and adventure await at the Forbidden Corner. Great castles also provided fantastic learning experiences such as Castle Howard and Helmsley Castle, while the reality of a rural existence on the moors comes to life at the Beck Isle Museum of Rural Life.
