Science
The teaching and learning of science can take many forms due to the large number of branches of the discipline, but all of them involve a large element of doing things, of experimenting, of making and breaking, of trying out new ideas, whether at primary or secondary level. This has been appreciated by museums and visitors centres, so that we now have a plethora of possibilities.
The Association for Science Education is the lead body helping schools to develop their teaching and learning. It offers support for primary and secondary science subject leaders, teachers and schools, and keeps schools abreast of curriculum and assessment changes and reforms. The Association aims to enrich science teaching and learning with free resources, which can be found at: www.schoolscience.co.uk
Some venues are obviously specifically suitable for science groups, but others, which are more cross-curricular, are less obvious. Below we give staff a pointer to these as well as making it easy to access the websites of the well known attractions.
CERN, the European Organisation for Nuclear Research, has long been popular with British school groups. It is celebrating 60 years this year and is encouraging teachers to look at its Cern Education website.
CAT, the Centre for Alternative Technology in Machynlleth, is also celebrating a major birthday this year – its 40th. It is a very different experience from CERN, but fascinating nonetheless.
The announcement in April 2015 that the new SKA radiotelescope is to be built in the UK will also be a huge boost for scientists looking for projects to follow and then visit as the telescope is built in readiness for full operational capability in 2025.
We should draw your attention to the fact that farm visits are popular with primary schools and there is a growing number of farms offering excellent opportunities – from feeding animals to driving tanks. Working farm on the Old Yarr Estate with activities scheduled throughout the day including Animal Encounters, tractor and trailer rides, plus a giant sandpit and play area for younger children.
All our activity sessions are in small groups so you can enjoy a real personal touch and our friendly staff are always happy to answer any questions you have about our animals.
Handle the fluffy young chicks, rabbits and guinea pigs in Cuddle Corner and laugh at the antics of the pygmy goats on Goat Mountain. You can feed the ducks, groom a pony, watch and get involved in the ever popular piglet race! So much to do here!

Education
Boasts a wide variety of animals on the farm including pigs, cattle, sheep, chickens, ducks, geese, turkeys, rabbits, guinea pigs and other small animals. Free to all.
A working cattle farm on the urban fringe of Huddersfield. We promote healthy food growing in the community and wildlife conservation, with indoor and outdoor learning facilities.
A family run farm that offers open farm days, alpaca experiences and birthday parties. Abbots View Alpacas is an excellent place to learn about these inquistive animals and take them for a walk around the farm’s 22 acres.
There are also miniature ponies to meet, plus pigs, ducks, rabbits and guinea pigs.
Court Farm and Leisure has Fishing Lakes, Farm Shop & Pick Your Own and a Mountain Board Centre.
The Farm Park is within Floralands Garden Centre, a place for all the family to visit. There is play equipment, a picnic area and a wide variety of animals to see and feed.
Foxburrow Farm is a mixed arable farm with a mosaic of wildlife habitats including ponds, woodlands, meadows and an old orchard alongside the cropped fields. The education facilities are centred on the traditional farmyard and include the barn classroom, toilets, covered activity areas and wildlife garden.
Belmont Children's Farm provides fun and education and easily accommodates school visits and parties.
Come and see the animals and at specific times participate in their daily care: you won’t even have to get your feet muddy! Kids can interact with the animals either in petting sessions or helping with their care, plus tractor rides available through the hidden valley.
Whether you want to just sit and watch the world go by or indulge in activities we have something for you at Clyne Farm.
This City Farm has lots of animals to cuddle, stroke and feed, horses to ride and they are a venue for birthdays too.
We are in the heart of London with all the sights, smells, sounds and experiences of rural life.
The collection of animals includes rare breed sheep, goats, alpacas and pigs, plus ferrets, rabbits and guinea pigs all ready and waiting for cuddles.
Mudchute Park and Farm isone of the largest inner City Farms anywhere in Europe. 32 acres of countryside in the middle of the Isle of Dogs to share with friendly furry and feathered creatures. There is also an outdoor play area in Milwall Park which is adjacent.
They have a collection of British rare breeds and over 200 animals and fowl on their farm!
Amerton Farm and Craft Centre and Playbarn is a farmyard with indoor adventure play area. It has a tractor track, rope bridge and barns on stilts connected with raised walkways. There is also a soft play area for children under 3 years of age, plus fun days and farm activities.

Schoolboy Falls From 60ft Cliff on School Trip
A 15-year-old boy fell 60ft over the edge of a cliff whilst on a geography school trip, miraculously only suffering minor injuries.
