Colchester is Britain’s oldest recorded town (known as Camulodunum). Its Roman heritage includes the ruins and sites of a fortress, port and temple. Meanwhile Colchester Castle houses Europe's largest Norman Keep. Not only does it offer a rich history and heritage, but also child friendly modern attractions. The most popular recreational attractions are Hollytrees Museum, Colchester Zoo and East Anglian Railway Museum.

Colchester Castle

Colchester Castle is the largest Norman Keep in Europe. Constructed on the foundations of the Temple of Claudius, built when Colchester was the first Roman capital of Britain, the Castle Museum today reveals many fascinating layers of history to visitors.

St Botolph's Priory

The remains of one of the first Augustinian priories in England, founded about 1100.

An impressive example of early Norman architecture, built in flint and reused Roman brick, the church displays massive circular pillars and round arches and an elaborate west front.

Later badly damaged by cannon fire during the Civil War siege of 1648.

Paycocke's House and Garden

A stunning Tudor merchant's house whose walls have more than a few stories to tell

Stunning woodcarving and elaborate panelling made this wealthy merchant's house a medieval des res built to impress.

Built around 1500 for Thomas Paycocke, the house is a grand example of the wealth generated in East Anglia by the cloth trade in the 16th century.

Bourne Mill

Picturesque watermill with working waterwheel

A delightful piece of late Elizabethan playfulness. Built for banquets and converted into a mill in the 19th century.

Grange Barn

13th-century monastic barn

One of Europe's oldest timber-framed buildings, it has a cathedral-like interior and is linked to a local Cistercian abbey.

Inside the barn hosts an exhibition of local woodcarving, tools and a collection of agricultural carts.

St John's Abbey Gate

This pinnacled gatehouse, elaborately decorated in East Anglian 'flushwork', is the sole survivor of the wealthy Benedictine abbey of St John. It was built c.1400 to strengthen the abbey's defences following the Peasants' Revolt. Later part of the mansion of the Royalist Lucas family, the gatehouse was bombarded and stormed by Parliamentarian soldiers during the Civil War siege.

Gainsborough's House

The museum and art gallery at the birthplace of artist Thomas Gainsborough in Sudbury.

Lavenham Guildhall

Set in the lovely village of Lavenham, the Guildhall of Corpus Christi tells the story of one of the best-preserved and wealthiest towns in Tudor England.

Lexden Earthworks and Bluebottle Grove

The Colchester earthworks at Lexden and Bluebottle Grove are among the few surviving late Iron Age defences in Britain.

They defended the west side of pre-Roman Colchester, Camulodunum, which was occupied by the Iron Age Catuvellauni and their leader Cunobelin from about AD 10, and before that by the Trinovantes.
