London South East
South East London has a rich heritage and boasts many popular museums and attractions such as the London Eye, London Dungeons, the Clink Museum, Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, Waterloo station, Tate Modern gallery, the Royal Festival Hall and much more along the south bank of the Thames. Not forgetting of course the tallest building in the UK - The Shard. The Oval cricket ground, Old Vic Theatre and Imperial War museum also feature. A popular area of South East London is Greenwich where a bustling market, the O2 Arena and the National Maritime Museum can be found.
The area lies on the River Thames and is home to many floating attractions including the World War II HMS Belfast, a replica of Sir Francis Drake's ship the Golden Hinde (which circumnavigated the globe in the 16th Century) and the Cutty Sark. It is also the site of the Meridian line which separates east and west hemispheres of the globe and from which Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) is measured. Further south the start line of the London Marathon is in Shooters Hill park, while Blackheath is so named due to the number of victims of the Black Death plague who were buried there in the 17th century.
