History: Colonized by Portugal in the 19th century but gained independence in 1974, and added Bissau to the countries name to avoid confusing with Guinea.

Watch Out For: It's best to avoid any political gatherings or similar events, as the topic is quite sensitive locally. You will also need a visa to enter Guinea-Bissau, so leave plently of time to sort this out prior to your trip.
